FAQs

Frequently asked questions (Revised on April 29, 2009)

Q: What exactly does the workshop cover?

A. The workshop is targeted at freshers and introduces delegates to all aspects of screenwriting – from idea to story to structure to screenplay. All chapters you would find in a standard screenwriting textbook along with the various approaches to writing but with plenty of practical inputs from guest lecturers – writer-filmmakers from the industry. The workshop will teach you how to translate words into images and how to translate the images in your head into words. The focus of the screenwriting workshop is to empower the writer by teaching him/her the fundamentals on HOW TO go about the writing process and NOT WHAT TO write. An outline of the syllabus will be posted on the website shortly.

Q: I don’t have any background in cinema or any related degree or diploma. Can I apply?

A: Yes, you can apply. As long as you are serious about screenwriting as a career. Selection will be on the basis of potential and interest, not experience. Since the medium of instruction is in English and most of the screenwriting tools today require basic operating knowledge of computers, we are likely to select delegates who can communicate effectively.

Q: Is there an age limit?

A: No. As long as you are serious about screenwriting as a career, you can apply. Selection will be on the basis of potential and interest, not experience. Since the medium of instruction is in English and most of the screenwriting tools today require basic operating knowledge of computers, we are likely to select delegates who can communicate effectively. Since, the idea behind the workshop is to bring fresh blood into the mainstream, the screening committee is likely to choose those who are likely to benefit most from the workshop. If you are looking at this as just an extra-curricular summer camp, chances are you may not make the list.

Q: I have just finished my Standard X/ XII/ Over 50. Can I apply?

Technically, you CAN apply if you’ve just passed out of Std. XII. But the fact of the matter is that the screening committee/faculty may find you too young for this workshop and unless there’s something exceptional about your resume, chances of you making the list are slim since we are looking at candidates who will benefit out of this exercise – writers who would put these skills to use in screenwriting and contribute towards creating quality cinema. This is not the only workshop that will ever happen. If you have just passed out of Std X, remember there will be more of these in the future. Your enthusiasm is commendable but you will have many such opportunities in future.

If you are over 50, we hope your resume reflects your interest in pursuing screenwriting as a career.

Q: How can I apply?

A. To apply, mail the following particulars to admissions@screenwritingindia.com before May 5, 2009.
a. Your resume
b. A 200-word synopsis of your favourite film
c. A list of your five favourite films
d. A passport size photograph

Q: Is there a postal address I can apply to?

A: No, we accept applications only through email.

Q: Can I submit the synopsis in Tamil, Hindi or Malayalam or should it be in English?

A: Since the medium of instruction for this workshop is in English, we would like you to submit your applications in English. Your favourite films could be in any language but the synopsis is a test of your grasp of the story and the ability to condense it within the limited number of words.

Q: Can I send it all in one file? Is there any format that you prefer? Can I send multiple files? Can I send Word/PDF files?

A. We would ideally like you to send us all the details in one PDF file. Or as one Word document. But we understand that not all applicants may be proficient with computers and are okay with the submissions as long as all documents are attached to the same mail. Which means that you cannot send the details in installments. Even if you wish to resend any bit of your application for any reason, please resend all the details and do inform us so that we do not have to process your application twice.

Q: What do you look for in a resume? What do you look for in a synopsis?

A: Your resume must have your personal details, contact information and broadly cover three heads – what you have done (qualification, work experience, body of work etc), what you are doing (current job profile, organisation) and what you are looking to do (Career Objective). What you are looking to do would go a long way in your selection.

Your synopsis is a test of your grasp of storytelling (what you take home from your favourite film) and your ability to retell the story of your favourite film in your own words and within 200 words. We are not that strict about the word limit but given the volume of applications received, make sure you do not ramble and make it boring for our screening committee.

Most importantly, we want you to be original. It is mandatory to write the synopsis in your own words. Synopsis reproduced from the internet will certainly jeopardise your chances of admission.

Your list of favourite films gives the screening committee an idea of your personality, exposure to cinema and your sensibility.

Q: Who is the screening committee?

If we tell you that, we might have to kill you. We plan to keep that information confidential to prevent candidates from approaching them personally.

Q: What is the course fee? Do I have to pay more if I am not a student? I am not employed.

A. The course fee for students with valid ID cards and bonafide certificates from their respective institutions is Rs.2500. The fees for students without ID cards and other non-students, working professionals, unemployed and self-employed is Rs.5000. The fees have to be paid through Demand Draft ONLY on selection. Unless intimated about your selection, do not send any form of payment. If you are not selected, you do not have to pay.

Q: Can you waive the fees for the unemployed and the underprivileged?

A: The fee for the programme is Rs.5000 and we have waived 50 per cent of the fees for bonafide students (holding valid ID cards) as scholarship. The fee includes lunch and refreshments during the breaks on all six days, course material and registration. In spite of this being a sponsor-free event, Raajkamal Films has made this course available at cost. Hence, we are unable to waive the fees any further.

Q: “Dear Mr. Kamal Haasan, I want acting chance. Here are my photographs.”/ “Mr.Kamal Haasan, I want to give you my feedback on your films/ add you on Facebook”

A: Mr. Kamal Haasan does not check email at the Admissions Desk. Unless you want to amuse us, please do not send your portfolio or any other fan-mail addressed to him to our email account.

Q: Can I send you a short film I made or a short story I wrote as a part of my application? Will it help me get selected?

A: No. Please do not send any original content. Any such content is completely unsolicited and may lead to your disqualification. Selection is on the basis of potential and not experience. This workshop is targeted at writers in specific and not filmmakers in general. We would like to keep this workshop controversy free without having to deal with copyright issues. Any application with a story you have written or an idea of a film you want to make will be rejected.

Q: Can I write a synopsis of a film I made or a short story I wrote?

A. No. The synopsis must be of your favourite film (it is for the screening committee to judge your understanding of a story and unless it’s a film the jury has heard about, your application may be at a disadvantage) and should not exceed 200 words. Do not send any original content. We are not responsible for any content that is unsolicited. We would like to keep this workshop controversy free without having to deal with copyright issues. Any application with a story you have written or an idea of a film you want to make will be rejected.

Q: What is the cost of accommodation at the IIT campus during the course of the workshop? Can I avail single room accommodation?

A. Please email hospitality.workshop@gmail.com to get these queries clarified. The tariff depends on your needs. Given the limited number of single AC and non AC rooms, we strongly recommend that you make your reservation at the earliest.

Q: What is the day-wise breakdown of the programme?

A: A detailed schedule of the workshop will be put up on the official website http://screenwritingindia.com shortly.

Q: Can I attend over video-conference?

A: No, this is a strictly instructional classroom-based event with a session or two over video-conference by our VIP speakers. We do not provide video conference facility for our participants.

Q: I have sent in my application but have not got any acknowledgement.

A: Due to high volume of applications, processing of application may take up to 48 hours. We send you an acknowledgement only after going through your application and making sure we have all the details we need. Given Gmail’s strict anti-spamming policy and the generic nature of our acknowledgement mail, we suspect some of our emails must be going to your Junk Folder. To counter this, we will be updating the list of applicants online twice a week. If you haven’t heard from us after 48 hours of sending us your application, it probably means we have not got your application. Do get in touch with us resending your application.

Given that May 5 is the last date of accepting applications, we strongly recommend that you send in your applications well before May 2, so that you have another 72 hours to resend your application in case you have not got any acknowledgement email from us. Don’t leave it till the last date since we will not accept applications after the midnight of May 5, 2009.

  15. Its heartening to know that at last a person like Kamal Hasan has taken this bold step for others to follow. We hope this will lead to more orientation classes in future, so that even for the regulars, it’ll be updating with the times. Another fervent wish for most of us would be, similar orientation in other crafts, especially make ups, art and props, film designing. The most biggest bottle neck is the availability of reasonable finance and exhibitions anomolies, which I hope such orientations will stablise. I’m sure Indian Films will be Global player very soon. Thanks a ton to allow me to contribute my thoughts.

  103. Hello,

This is a great initiative and I would love to participate. I am employed in TCS, Chennai. I would like to know if I can publish a synopsis/review of one of the films I didn’t like, as I feel it is much easier for me to write on something I like. Nevertheless, I would furnish details of my favourite films. If this is not acceptable, then I would send in something as desired. Just curious to have asked this question.

    Regards,
    Santosh.

  133. Hi,

Conducting a workshop on screen writing is very good idea and I love to attend though it is difficult for me. I love to write story and screenplay for movies.

But, as I have another good job already, I am curious to know answers about this career. I think, it is a good idea to include some of these questions in your FAQ list.

    1) Is it a good career?

2)How the pay is determined for a script writer? Because it seems the famous writers who did screenplay writing in tamil cinema, are not that rich. I might be wrong.

3)What are the duties after writing the script?

    Please reply if possible.

    Best regards,
    KPC.

  134. Please add me on the mailing list.
    Thanks.

  235. As per the particulars to apply third one is ‘A list of your five favourite films’ can we include the name of the film we narrated in synopsis ?

    Please revert

    Regards
    Srinivasa Reddy

  236. actually by the word synopsis…do u mean the screenplay of the film or about review of what i lik in the film…ie the postives.acting ,negatives etc????…can anyone clarify my doubt???

  237. This was the reply I received from the help desk earlier -

    “Dear all,
The synopsis is a test of your grasp of storytelling and your ability to retell that story. It is not a test of filmmaking or film appreciation/criticism or your ability to review a film. It just tries to test what did you take home from the story and how will you retell the same story within 200 words. Hope that clarifies. You can choose any language film as long as you write down the synopsis in English and we insist English because the medium of instruction is English.”

  238. Dear friends,

Its great news that this initiative of a rather unknown facet of cinema “Screenwriting” is taken up by India”s fine
actor and a good gentleman. I had aways been his fan from 1979 and like his film Redrose and Guru and Sagarasangamam very much. Pl keep me listed and would like to attend the worksop God willing.

  239. good effort by Kamal, pl keep me in the mailing list.

  240. thank u Ms.shubhashree….. 4m ur reply i infer tat i do hav problems in gettin selected as i mistakenly thought the synopsis as the review of de film….now tat i hav submitted de resume…i cant change it too……hmmm….bad luck…yet hoping 4 de best…..anyways my wishes to u…. :]

  241. Don’t get worried. There is time till 12 May… for all you know others may be worse than you!!! Just a joke… Take things easy – not attending workshop does not mean that you cannot continue to work and study by yourself… isn’t it? I’m just playing the devil’s advocate here – no reason why you don’t stand a chance… Keep your fingers crossed and keep doing what you do best… Read, write, and be creative..!

I don’t know if what I wrote was what they wanted either, but I know it’s readable – rest will be as God ( or the strange coincidences that we will never know why) wills…

  242. hehe….ya….bt cant afford to miss the chance na….so a little bit annoyed….btw…r u working????? u seem to be very matured huh…??

  243. Hi John.
Yes I’m working. You know – chance by definition has a mind of it’s own – so no point worrying about missing a chance. Success will find u if it’s so destined, man!

What’s important is not money and success – what you need will find it’s way to you – what’s important is saying what you wish to say – in art at least. You also keep in mind who you want to say it to and see that there’s no mismatch there – ? -

What are you doing? Student? IIT?

  244. BTW – I don;t mean to imply that getting into this workshop is not important to me… I just mean – don’t worry about what you’ve done after you’ve done it… Now’s the time to wait and see… My tamil friends say – vanda Malai ponaa *** Mudi. Ask someone to translate if you don’t get it first time…!
    Good luck!
    S
